Softail Charging Issue
I am trying to identify a no-charge issue with my 1990 FXSTC. The battery is about 8 months old , accepts a charge when connected to an external charger, and will start / run the bike for about a day then dies, apparently from not receiving any voltage from the stator. However, at the two stator terminals on the plug where it exits the primary, we get 35 AC volts at about 2000 rpm which is within spec according to the service manual. The DC voltage at the battery does not increase upon cold start-up which, if the regulator is working, should occur. We replaced the regulator but still no increase in voltage at the battery upon startup and a 2000 rpm rev which would indicate the stator is not working. When the bike is off and we ground either of the stator terminals on the plug where it exits the primary, we get continuity which, according to the service manual, means the stator is grounded and must be replaced. Is it possible the stator cold be grounded and still putting out 35 volts? Maybe voltage is being generated but is going to ground rather than to the battery? Sure would appreciate any insight and / or helpful suggestions. Thank you.
