sorry it does work great as you say , however it works good between connectors , ( the clamping pressure makes the connection )

I'm no mechanic! However had a similar issue with my Sportster I had bought used took it to HD they replaced the wiring harness and problem solved. Good luck! It can get frustrating trying to figure electricals out.
