Default Clutch Hub Issue

Hey all,

91 FXSTC Softail Custom

So after doing a handlebar change, when I was about to adjust the clutch cable, found that the nut that holds the center bolt was way too tight. Finally able to take it out but then realized that the clutch hub outer teeth that hold the outer plate together were worn off.

Ordered a new clutch hub which came in and installed it.

Put everything back together:

so it looks like this:

and when I made the adjustment to the clutch cable and pressed it, it moved all the plates forward, outer lid(plate?) popped off and damaged the teeth again...

Defective clutch hub or something was not installed correctly? Seems like it's an aluminum part with tiny teeth that is supposed to hold a lot of pressure on those tiny teeth so kinda lost at the moment

Any help is appreciated.

Know when I took mine apart, I pulled in the clutch just slightly to remove snap ring. But mine only holds the adjuster plate. What actually holds mine all together is 6 bolts. Hard to believe that groove holds the clutch diaphragm spring back.

Did you do the following order and all parts? That is a pretty expensive part. I do not see two grooves in your part. Do you have correct part????...https://www.dodgecityharleydavidson....(1991)//CLUTCH

yeah when I select my bike model/year (91 FXSTC) on JP that's the only one that comes up:

The ones with the bolts seem to be for later years... can't seem to find any aftermarket clutch hubs for 91 googling...

See that second groove in the fish. Did you install two snap rings?

yeah there was a ring for the inner and a cotter ring that go into the groove of the clutch hub teeth... these were pushed out when pressing the clutch after adjustment and seemingly broke the groove in the teeth..

Is it possible you have the ***** in the rams out of position on the transmission side where the clutch cable goes in. That would push the clutch in too far and when you cranked in the adjuster, to pulled off the top of the aluminum. Seems you would have had to screw in adjuster with a wrench to do that. After I brake the lock nut, I use my fingers for the adjuster.

Didn't really mess with anything on the transmission side other than remove and put the new cable in... And after this whole thing happened I opened it and seem to be correct according to the service manual

You really cannot look at it other then see snap is in that side and lever the clutch lever and make sure push rod is moving and going back in all the way by pressing on it with your thumb
