I am installing an aftermarket radio on my 1997 Fatboy. It came wired with this plug as well as an extra section of wiring. Is there any available location to plug in directly or does it have to run all the way to the battery and connect directly there. I read somewhere that there may be a plug to attach to.
Dont know about a 1997 but you can find power under the dash panel going to or from the ignition switch depending on if you want it to run with the ign / acc or all the time
Look for a orange wire with a white stripe( like my 2011 FLHR). Put a test light on it and see if it is a switched power wire, if so, when the ignition is on you will have power, ignition off, no juice.....
I'm assuming your also installing an amplifier as well as a radio due to without an amplifier you're not going to hear much music unless you're parked.
You should get a relay and wire it to the tail light.
I believe it's the orange/white wire but don't hold me to that.
Then on the power side, wire the relay directly to the battery (through a fuse of course).
Then connect your amplifier to the energized side of the relay.
This way you're wiring will be able to handle the amps that the amplifier is drawing and since the relay is connected to the tail light you won't forget to turn it off and run your battery down.
