Hey guys got an 05 flstci love the bike incredible ride however I'm a bit low on power with my wife and I on it was just wondering what upgrades have been done to this motor that actually work good without costing an arm and leg or having to be worked on constantly... looking into cams 509 510 585 hydraulic tensioners not sure what intake would work good not a big fan of the SE products I prefer s&s and just would like to hear from tried n true installs.
If the 509s were available when I had gear driven cams installed, I would have bought them. I did install the 510s and have been happy with them, they just come to life at higher RPMs. If I had to do it over again with a stock engine with stage 1, I would go to the 509s.
I did a big bore kit on my '03 Heritage. It made a BIG difference.....
I got the SE kit at the time (back in '03), but there are different big bore kits available these days...
My advice is to find a shop with a good reputation, and follow their recommendations, in terms of bore/cam/heads.... it's better to use a tried & true combination rather than just "throw parts" at an engine....
And of course, don't forget to get a good dyno tune from a reputable tuner...
Well I have a very good shop mechanic has been building harleys fixing cycles for over 40 years and he told me if I bring the parts he will not charge me for labor so I'm doing some research as I dont want to just throw things at my motor and hope it works I put alot of miles on my bike 4500 since February and got a whole lot more to go so trying to figure out my best option.. s&s has a big bore kit I really like but my engine is over the tolerance for run out so cannot go with gear driven cams so going to upgrade to hydraulic just trying to figure out what has worked well for others or what has failed ..
I considered a sprocket change to the 30/70 ratios recommended on this site. I believe it would be cheaper than cams and would increase acceleration in all gears while keeping a stock engine. Only down side is re-calibration of the speedometer and lower top end.
Apols of Alexandria will do the running and dyno for 450 ... speaking of tuning does anyone have a recommendation for this bike I've never used a tuner but my mechanic told me to get one .. he uses a Vance n Hines fuel pak on his ultra with the 80 inch and his bike is loud and super fast for a bagger.
check out Fuel Moto. They're a sponsor here and looks like they're on sale. Check out this link: You can send them a PM here and ask question or call them and tell them you're from HDFORUMS.
Thank you all for your input... I found an s&s 4" big bore kit comes with everything needed has 585ge cams s&s tc3 oil pump and plate hydraulic tensioners or option for gear cam which wint work on my bike ezee pushrods s&s tappets and does not require a fuel pak or replacement of springs or heads... stock head will bolts right on the current exhaust will bolt on and the only requirement I cannot take care of myself is the dyno tuning.. it brings the 88" motor w67 hp to 100" around 140hp so i think that's going to be my winter time consumer right there... the 585ge cams are a mid range to high range cam setup and everything is included in the kit after tax looking at 2876.41
When it comes to dyno tuning, there are only two choices in my opinion.... PowerVision or TTS... most good dyno operators will be well versed in either the TTS or PowerVision, most with both...
I went with a PowerVision Tuner and haven't looked back.. It is easy to use. I can dial in a base map from FuelMoto or DynoJet for a simple stage I mod, using the auto tune feature... or it can be used with a dyno for more complex needs. It can read codes, be used as supplemental gauges, adjust many parameters of your tune, and is very intuitive to use... Plus if you buy from FuelMoto, you get support from both FuelMoto AND DynoJet for maps and such....
One main thing I liked about the PowerVision tuner, is that I can add as many bikes as I want to my tuner, for $199 per extra license. I have all four of my bikes, and three good friend's bikes all on my tuner... If I went with TTS, you can have two licenses per tuner. You have to buy another full price tuner, for every other bike you want to add.... insted of just purchasing another license... for me that would have been more expensive...
Good luck with the mods....!
PS- the 124" S&S crate engine gets mid 130s in HP, without head work. I seriously doubt you'll be anywhere near 140HP with a 100" engine. Someone's pulling your crank (pun intended) if their quoting those numbers...
If you truly believe you are going to be anywhere near 140HP, you'd better start planning to split the cases, balance and weld the crank, maybe install a Timken lefty bearing, and install forged rods.... if you want it to last past break-in. Anywhere near 140HP on a stock lower end is a ticking time bomb, especially if your crank is already out of spec for gear drive cams.... for what it's worth....
