Default 2009 Softail -surface rust in gas tank?

Hi Guys,

Just need your advice on this, I was doing a check of the fuel gauge float in my 2009 softail gas tank and noticed that immediately below the fuel cap opening there is a portion of the metal at the bottom of the tank that is bare with a little surface rust on it. The rest of the tank looks like its coated black? just wondering if this is a big deal? or just live with it?. The fuel is clear with no sediment or rust flakes apparent.

Many thanks

Regards

I recommend keeping the tank topped up and don't go looking for work until it has to be done. It won't hurt anything.

Thanks very much for your replies, was just after a reality check as started thinking new tank time or tank off repair etc , local HD Dealership Service Manager said the same thing , probably it was stored for a while, just to keep an eye on it top up the tank and ride it more often.

Regards

I went through this "issue" with my 2001 Springer. I bought it a year ago, with only 9K miles.... It had obviously sat for a long time....

The coating in the fuel tank was all peeling. The petcock kept the liner from clogging any fuel lines or carb. As I rode the bike, the pieces of liner would slosh around, they would affect the fuel delivery by causing a blockage at the petcock.....

I read about many ways to clean the tank, and then re-coat the inside of the tank.... all of the coating products had people who swore they were fantastic and others who said they were junk....

I cleaned it out the best I could. There were still some patches of coating clinging tenaciously to the inside of the tank. I chose not to re-coat (some suggested leaving it bare).

I have been running it bare steel inside the tank for a year now... still looks the same as when I finished cleaning it, there is little, if any, rust apparent. I do tend to keep the tank full, or nearly full......

As long as the remaining liner stays attached to the inside of the tank.... you will be fine....

If it were pitted rust, I would say do a pressure check, but it doesn't sound like more than surface rust....

Ride on....!

Yes, I’d did the same 3 years ago and mine has been fine too.
