Default 95 FatBoy Starter install

Hey guys,
My starter crapped out a couple of days ago and I decided to replace it myself.
I'm going with a new starter because I think the one I just took out was the original?
Took me a while to get the bugger out, but overall fairly straight forward procedure.
Just waiting for the new starter to come in.

Does anyone have any pointers they would like to share with me?
Here's some picture of my Thursday night adventure......lol

My first step would be to hookup my Snapon volt meter/load tester, and determine whether I needed a battery,a cable, wiring or switch repair,or a starter. In almost 45 years,I've seen ONE bad starter on a Harley-and it was an Ultima that I bought for a Softail I was building from scratch.

The starter in my `89 Softail is original...over 140,000 miles.

You just wasted your money on a starter...

Systematic troubleshooting would have found the problem.

The service manual has a detailed troubleshooting process, or we could have helped you here...

Oh well, it`s your money.

How did I waste my money?
I bench tested the starter when I got it out and it's completely shot!

Plus, I'm not the original owner of my FatBoy.

Thanks

What is completely shot on the starter?

What troubleshooting steps did you take to determine that the starter needed to be removed?

It's probably the solenoid, doesn't matter, He's got a new one coming and can rebuild the old one.

The last couple of weeks when starting the bike, it made a whine sound kinda like spinning gear?
I ruled out a lot of other things because I have all new ignition, battery and I recently checked out all the wiring.
I also watched a few videos on YouTube and after bench testing the starter I came to the conclusion that the starter clutch is
shot and the solenoid contacts are worn too.
In my opinion, getting a new starter for $200 (Canadian) is my best option?
I won't have to worry about another part breaking or wearing out in the starter.

I also have a video of the noise it was making and another video of me bench testing the starter.
The gear rod won't spin or shift out when I power up the starter on the bench, just makes a loud screeching noise.

I'll keep you guys posted.
Thank you

It was definitely the starter.

The bike starts like a dream now……So happy.
Total time for me to re & re the starter was approx. 4 hrs
The hardest part was taken off the oil tank and putting it back in.

I took apart the old starter and the plunger/solenoid/clutch gears were all worn away.
Total cost: $200 Cnd

Thank you,
Spiros
