1998 FXSTS - does the starter motor ground electrically through the mounting bolts through the frame or is there a separate ground strap? My starter had the dreaded click until I routed a separate ground directly to battery. Frame was recently powder coated and I am wondering if I need to clean the mounting holes for the transmission or was there a strap I am missing. Thanks forum in advance for your help.

Reason: Spell
Grounds through the frame. Clean the powder coating off under the battery to frame ground about the size of a dime.
If this doesn't work, you can always run a ground strap from the engine group to the frame.
First of all, make sure your battery is fully charged.
Thanks Joe. I will remove the powder coat to ensure a frame ground through the trans mounting bolts. I have checked or replaced everything else and only after “jumping” a ground wire to battery neg terminal did it work. I wasn’t aware powder coat was such a good insulator. I will focus on creating a frame ground and additional ground strap if needed. Thanks again.
