Just picked up an 06 Std. from a buddy of mine. I'm a long time bagger. Me and mostly my two sons will ride the Softail. One son I rescued from metric, the other went full in and needs converting !! Always liked the look of these bikes. Just being quasi lazy and asking for any info at all that anyone might want to offer. There's an outside shot that we may change the tins from red to ?? They're in excellent condition but my one boy isn't a red fan. What's part interchange like between years and other models? Anything we need to look out for? Tensioners have been looked at. Thanks in advance!!

Just start searching on this forum. There is tons of information on all kinds of things. Just pull the tins off anfd have them painted if you are looking for a color change.
Ton's of options, you & your sons need to decide what direction you want to go.
Like stated above you can repaint, but you can also look around for a full set of used/new tin's.
Are you just looking at changing the color or more?
If you are changing the tins you can also change the style of the bike...
The only reason I don't have two sets of tins for my bike is the stuff I have added that I would have had to have painted (or buy another set).
All depends on what you want & what you are willing to spend (in time & money).
"What's part interchange like between years and other models?"
Any part can be made to fit with the proper amount of re-engineering......
However, if you want to know what parts will bolt up with no modifications, the easy way is to use one of the online parts finders. If you want to know if say, a 2003 fender will fit your 2006 bike... look-up the part number for your year/model on the parts finder... then look-up the part number fo the year/model you want to use.. if the part numbers match, they are a direct fit....
That is not the final word however... you can also ask on this forum.. Sometimes the difference is as simple as a different mounting hole or very minor size difference. Sometimes they will fit fine, even though they are different part numbers.... Never hurts to check on here via a search or new question.
