Default The Flying Dip Stick...again

2007 Fatboy, 27K miles. Previous owner installed temperature reading dip stick. I read the threads about the dip stick being blown out of the oil tank and the general feeling was the oil tank was overfilled. In my case the dip stick popped out today but 1,700 miles after the most recent oil change. I have not added an oz. of oil since the change and the dip stick has not popped out until this evening. It got trapped between the seat and the tank so there was only an oz. or so on the tank and down on the exhaust. OIl temp was about 180, outside air temp 50, dip stick read on the full mark. Total distance of the ride was about 12 miles; made one stop about 2 miles from home. Don't think the dip stick popped until start up to head home. I would have noticed the oil smoke from oil on the pipes at the lone stop if it had popped prior. The oil smoke was what drew my attention when I pulled into the garage.

Some have suggested adding an O-ring to the rubber on the dip stick; my concern is that it may roll off when removing the dip stick to check the oil and end up in the oil tank where I expect it to hide very well. Anyone come up with better solutions? The threads I read were back around 2012 and beyond.

Mine never launched out of the oil box (my oil level is always 1/2 full or a little less), but it did start to leak a little. I went to to my local Ace Hardware with the dipstick, and got an O-ring that fit perfectly. I haven’t had a drop of oil leak, and that O-ring hasn’t moved a bit.

If you are really that worried about it, you can always replace it with a stock one.

That's one thing I miss about my Road Glide. The oil cap screwed into the tank. I had the same problem as you when my battery died. It had enough juice to turn the motor over but not enough to actually start. After the motor spun over (slowly) a few times my temp gauge dip stick went flying across the parking lot. After it did that the third time and I concluded the bike was not going to start anyway, I got a ride home and went back the next day with a new battery. I also put my stock dip stick back in. Not sure if it makes any difference but the stock one does seem like it feels a little more snug. They'll both leak just a little oil down the side of the oil tank if it's up near the full hot mark and I run it pretty hard. I've never had one pop out when the bike was actually running. Hope I never do.

This is usually caused by an obstruction in the breather system. Check for kinks in the tubes from the heads.
If they’re good, they may be blocked by oil residue, pull them and clean them, also the fittings in the heads.
