Currently have a stock 01 Softail Standard. Found a 2017 Breakout motor for sale and wanted to swap out with the stock 88. Is this possible and what level of work would it be. Comes with wiring harness and charging system.
While the 2017 Twin Cam with have bigger displacement, and is newer... it will take some $$$$$, time, and effort to make it fit... it is NOT a direct swap..
Also, your 2001 bottom end will have left side Timken bearings, a forged crank, and probably a MUCH better run out measurement..
If you have fairly low miles on the 2001, just do a 95" or 98" big bore kit to include headwork and good cams... you will far outperform any OEM 103"....
If you have high miles, get a reputable shop to rebuild the bottom end (if you can't do it yourself) while increasing the bore, better pistons, cams, and headwork...
I suspect you will have less $$$ in a rebuild with big bore, than to fit the '17 103" into a 2001 bike... and in the end you should will have a better, faster engine...
Good luck with your decision....
