I know this has been discussed on many forums, but none of the resolutions have fixed my issue.
I have a 2002 Heritage softail with EFI. For that year, I believe its Delco EFI and has a TSSM. I have done a lot of different things over the years, but in late summer of 2019 I swapped all my tins for ones I had custom painted (Dark blue). I added a fairing from Wide open customs and hard bags. Essentially, it looks like a street glide on the softail frame.
My issue is, on 4 occasions (since the swap) the bike will start, then shortly shuts off. In those cases, the bike had sat for awhile (3 times in the sun - all hot days)
I noticed after the bike "ran out of gas" the fuel pump was not making noise when I cycled the on/off switch. (My fuel pump is almost always has an audible squeal.)
After sitting awhile, usually in the shade, the bike does start. (20 minutes or so)
There are no faults on the ECM at time of no start nor afterwards.
The first time I thought was a loose connection, since after I re-seated connections to dash area, the bike started.
I have cleaned the fuse box with contact cleaner and used Dielectric grease.
I have purchased and swapped out system and fuel pump relays.
I have checked, cleaned, and re-seated all the ground connections I am aware of (Most at the seat connection where tank screws down)
I pulled the power commander out of the loop (tried to start) and put back in (just to make sure it wasn't failing)
I have replaced original fuel cap with another vented cap.
I have spark (tested front and back when bike wouldn't start
I took to a local shop that validated no codes, that fuel pump looks ok, no bad connections, etc.
There is NO fuel in the pressurized line (disconnected from tank and checked)
The bike has typically started and in a few minutes (1-2 minutes) shutdown like its out of gas.
The last thing I have done, a few days ago, and not sure if its made a difference is blow out the fuel pressure check valve.
I removed and used air compressor to make sure air could get through check valve and line coming from tank to rear fending.
I have put several thousand miles on it since my issue started and it hasn't shut off when I am riding it.....Only seems to be on start up, generally sitting in the sun.
The local shop doesn't know what to do next. And I am concerned its not going to start one of these times.
I have a fuel quantum fuel pump kit ready to put into it, just not ready to pull all that apart, if I don't need to.
Don't know aobut the lack of a fuel pump sound, but some of your symptoms sound like an old Honda 450 I borrowed from a friend many years ago. To boil it down, it kept flooding. I told 2 shops I limped to that this was the problem. Ended up spending SO much money getting a trailer and a car, etc. to get the bike back to the guy I borrowed it from. About a year later, I asked what it was: "It was flooding..." and something about points, carb, something, yada yada. (I am NOT mechanical.)
