Default Gear change issues

Hi all, my 1999 softail standard has just developed gear change issues.
changing up from 2nd to 3rd the gear shift does not return to its usual position, but stays upwards.
It may drop or I need to change down then back up again.
Anyone had this problem?

I was watching a video about adjustments in the trans and I believe there's a spring that returns the lever to center.
Also a bolt that locks the shift lever to the shaft.

Remove the nuts and bolts that hold the long shift rod on and remove the rod.

Check the front shift lever(s) for freedom of movement, if binding, clean, grease etc.

Check the rear shift lever at the transmission, make sure it is tight onto the shaft, no wobble whatsoever.

Get the rear wheel off the ground, so that you can move the rear wheel back and forth while you check shifting.

Shift the transmission through the gears, see if that lever returns to the centered position.

If it does not spring back to the centered position, it may be a broken spring on the shift pawl....

Start by removing linkage from foot peg mount, cleaning and re-greasing with a good waterproof grease.
Check o-rings

First thing I'd do is re-adjust the clutch pack, and adjust the cable. Pay attention to the fluid level.
Doesn't get it, good chance the pawl needs addressed. That's a pia.
