RE: Rear Wheel Alignment Fixes front steering issue
That is loaded question! If the belt alignment is off when you correct the wheel alignment. Doesnt this make the bike a defective product? Are you saying that HD built my bike with a slight misalignment due to improperly built bike?[:-]
RE: Rear Wheel Alignment Fixes front steering issue
Ihad to adjust my belt tension just recently 07FLSTC, I ended up having to adjust the rear wheel alignment. In the 07 Softail Service Manual it tells you to align the rear wheel by taking measurements from the center of rear axle to the center of pivot shaft, center of rear axle is easy there is a hole dead center of each axle nut, finding true dead center on the pivot shaft on my bike is another issue, no markings or holes and the right side pivot shaft bolt is half covered by the V&H exhaust. The manual says the measurements should be within 1/32" of each other.
Nowhere in the manual does it tell you how the rear belt should track in the rear sprocket? I have read in this forum in different places that the belt willtrack in the rear sprocket on the left side when bike is rolling forward & track to the right side when bike is rolling backwards. After my belt and rear wheel adjustments my belt tracks to the left no matter which way the bike is rolling and looked at the bikes on the HD showroom floor & their beltsare also sitting on the left side of the sprocket. I have also read somewhere here in this forum that the belts ride to the left side of the sprocket due to the angle the belt is put at coming off the pulley at the back of the primary?

When you say the right side is closer, do you mean the right handlebar is closer to you? As in the bike handlebars are slightly turned to the right, but the bike is going straight? That's the problem I'm having, just not sure where to start looking...

This seems to be more common than I first thought. Start at the rear wheel alignment. There are a few posts on how to do this.
