Default New (Old) Deuce (Some Concerns)

Hey guys, first post. Just bought a 07 Deuce with 4500 miles on it. The tires are 11 years old so I wanted to replace them. It currently has Metzler 160/70 on the rear and MH 90.21 on front. Wanted to back with same tire, but they seem to be hard to find. Was curious what most people are putting on their bikes these days. Not a fan of Dunlap from previous experiences with them. Also will a 170 or 180 fit on the 17x4.5 rim?

Also it has a Van Hines exhaust and a fi2000 tuner under the seat. I have never messed with s tuner so I am wondering if I need to be concerned with it. From what I read there is not maintenance and does not mess with the MAPS, and will allow me to add an air intake without having to do any tuning, Has anyone messed with this type of tuner?

Welcome to the forum and ride safe! The V&H pipes are a a major plus and you need that tuner. The tires, this looks like a dealer sold bike. In my state a dealer cannot sell a vehicle with bad tires - 11 year old tires are bad tires and should be replaced free of charge - THEYRE NOT SAFE! As for what to replace em with, Check on Dunlop, Metz, Conti's etc...

Did you get service records / report with the bike?

Safe to say, had the dealer replaced the tires, they would not be "free"
Increase the cost of "reconditioning" and the price tag goes up.

O.P. did you check Dennis Kirk for Metzeler availability ? Metzeler Cruisetec`s are in stock in OE sizes , did not check the other models or sizes
Yes the stock rim can accommodate a wider tire

I put the Dunlop American elite on my deuce a year ago they handle very well . This is a good time of the year to find deals on tires , shop slow and with patients and you’ll save your self 75 bucks if your buying 2 tires .

Also can I ask what you pay for the bike ?

Avon has been my tire choice for a while.
Your Deuce will take a 180 (with NO mods) but I would check the tire Mfg's chart for min/max rim width.

The older belts should be replaced also ? No fun throwing a belt!

I had a new '07 Deuce back in the day and bought another one just like yours last summer. I kept the original tire sizes when I replaced them and really had no issue getting them. I had a Cobra Fi2000 on a Victory and it did what it was supposed to do. The lack of O2 sensors is why it is required. The reason I posted this is for you to make sure that the recall was completed that was early in their life. It involves the routing of the positive battery cable and the installation of a new battery box. The cable could rub on the oil tank and there were reports of them causing fires. When I bought my new one, I installed an alarm siren and saw that the cable was laying right on a weld seem. I thought it looked a little suspicious and I put a piece of rubber fuel line around the cable and zip tied it. When I did the recall, the guys a the Harley shop were amused. Knowing that we, as the customer, are Harley Davidson's research, testing, and development team, I always check a new bike for really stupid stuff.....Ken

Congrats on the new bike.... it should give you years of good service...

You are wise to change the tires, 11 years is really pushing the envelope... The general rule is 7 years, regardless of tread.. I tend not to skimp on a vehicle with only two tires between me and the ground..

However, if the tires are 11 years old... I'd bet big money your brake fluid hasn't been flushed and is long overdue also... You may want to flush both front and rear brake systems with new fluid..

I have no experience with the V&H fi200 tuner. I own a PowerVision tuner and have a license for each of my EFI bikes.

FWIW.... any tuner... whether it's a flash tuner that downloads a new map, or a piggyback tuner that fools the ECM into make adjustments to the current map... You are in fact "messing with the MAPS".. just different ways of doing it.. Even with a piggyback tuner, if you make a change to the airflow of your engine, it needs to know how much to "fool" the ECM to provide more fuel... or you will be running lean.. I suspect there are selections for various types/degrees of mods within that tuner.. I would call V&H, visit their website, or try to find a users manual online for that tuner, to learn what it's capabilities are, and how to adjust it for various mods...

Good luck with the new bike... Enjoy!!

I added a Zipper's auto-tune to my first deuce. (Thundermax) It was pretty pricey and requires closed-loop O2 sensors. I will have to say that it was pretty cool and worked flawlessly. I have given thought to welding in new bungs on my Vance and Hines and installing a Thundermax on this Deuce. Out of all my bikes, I like the Deuce the best. For just simply running around and doing stuff, the Deuce is spot-on. I have an Indian Roadmaster and a couple of old shovelheads. The Deuce is simply a good motorcycle. I think the little slim tank is what draws me in.

Thanks. I did see that recall. I checked the site by putting in my VIN# and it said completed.
