Default Speedo/Odometer issue

I have a 1996 Heritage Classic. I replaced the engine with an Ultima 107" evo. I reused the 5 speed tranny. Also, the speedo was not working so I replaced it. Now the speed reads to high by about 20%. I did a 100 mile ride and the odometer read 800. Is this a bad speed sensor? My mechanic didnt think so since the speed was not erratic or anything. I would order a speedometer recalibrator to fix the speed. But what do I need to do about the odometer? I would just check the speed sensor but have to remove the starter and oil lines so have order a replacement since i have to go through all the work,ch?

Any other ideas what could show the odometer off by so much.

The bike runs great otherwise.

I am trying to process the information provided.
You have a 1996 Heritage Classic
Replaced the engine with an Ultima 107" evo.
Reused the 5 speed tranny. It reads like NO gearing changes, NO sprocket changes, NO internal primary chain changes, NO wheel size changes).
The speedo was not working so you replaced it.
There is no mention as to why/how it was not working (for example : odometer LCD bleed-out, needle not functional, no lights in speedometer?)
You state speed reads to high by about 20%.
You did a 100 mile ride and the odometer reads 800.
But 20% would be 120 miles not 800...is that a typo? or do you mean that speedometer had 680 miles before the 100 mile ride and that it now has 800 miles.
It would seem like your year and model would perhaps have a factory LCD odometer readout on the speedometer correct?
What specific speedometer did you use as a replacement?
Did you get a factory speedometer or one of the copies? Perhaps the Drag specialties unit along with the sub-harness?
The older factory 12 wire speedometers with the LCD readout were not Plug & Play and require either the same kind of speedometer or a sub-harness and a switch to the 1999 to about 2003 plug style speedometer.
For now forget about actual speed.
You need to clarify if needle matches the odometer reading.
If the needle reading matches the odometer reading then it is a speed pulse problem.
*If the needle does NOT match the odometer reading then perhaps the speedometer needle was pushed onto speedometer motor shaft on the speedometer during assembly in the wrong clock position.
*In that case the LCD odometer would read correctly for distance traveled but speed reading while riding would be wrong.
If it is a speed pulse problem then a speedometer calibrator like the plug and play unit from Daytona Digital would be a good choice.
It has a good wire lead.
Basically you would then use a GPS for correct speed and press the + /- buttons on end of calibrator unit while riding to dial in the correct speed.
But you need to confirm if the needle reading matches the odometer reading first.

IM,

The speedo did not work so I replaced it with a copy from Ebay that said it was a direct replacement, plug and play. So the new odometer has 0 miles on it.

I went for a 100 mile ride, one I do all the time. I rode with my buddy and told him to ride at 60 mph at one point so I could check my speedo. My speedo read low 70 mph. After my known 100 mile trip, my odometer read 800 miles. So needle does not match odometer. I would expect odometer to read about 120 miles.

I know I can fix the speedo calibration with a Dakota. But whats the issue with the odometer reading so high as its off the same stock tranny/gears?

Thanks

Perhaps speedometer is getting feedback from coil or sparkplug wires.
Is old speedometer available? what actually happened to it?
How was this speedometer wired to harness?
Who did installation?
Your replacement unit can be bench tested by a speedometer shop to confirm current function.

Speedo had not worked in many years per the previous owner so I just replaced. Installation is simple, just unplug old unit and plug in new unit. Its the exact same plug so no changes to the harness. We have no speedometer shop that i know about in country.

I guess next step is to replace the speed sensor. Or I will have the highest mileage Harley in short time.

Speedo is not compatible for your scoot, get the proper one or have yours re calibrated.
