I had a simular problem years back with a Sportster-it turned out to be the speed sensor that was on top of the motor-at least that's where it was on that Sportster-it cost like 30 bucks I think.

IMO no need to replace the speed sensor; cleaned mine four years and 35.000 km ago and it still works fine...

So you're saying that you have had to clean it more than once or twice?? IMHO I would just replace it....once.

voltage regulator

I bought a new 2000 fatboy and this used to happen once in a while, but not often. I sold the bike with like 2500 miles and apparently it started doing it again. The guy who bought it took it in to a dealer. They said it had some crappy voltage regulator on it, not the regular stock one. I have no idea how it could have gotten swapped out. Once it was replaced it never happened again.
