Default Speedo compatibility

Hello All.
I have a 2005 Heritage Softail and the speedo has died. I have been offered a speedo from a 2009 Softail Deluxe. Will I be able to just unplug my broken one and plug in the Deluxe speedo. Thanks very much>

I think it is tied to the VIN, if it is free wouldn't hurt to try. The mileage is the potential problem. Harley sells an analog tach/speedo that some have tried. It also gets married to the bike.

I will agree that the speedos probably cannot be swapped between the two...

I say this because the current replacement part numbers are different:

1999-2003, replacement speedo #67033-99A

2004-2007, replacement speedo #67033-04B

2008, replacement speedo #67033-08

2009-2010, replacement speedo #71512-09

I believe the several versions of the #67033-xx speedos are compatible, except for the info / function of the odometer. There is a totally different part number for 2009 (#71512-09) so there must have been a major change to the speedo. It may have been the link via the VIN to the ECM.

While it's possible (but unlikely IMHO) the '09 may plug & then play in the '05, I would suspect at the very least some features would not translate/work between the two. Since your '05 is the more basic of the two years, that may not be an issue....

If the source of the '09 will let you test it out, it can't hurt to try... it's not like it will blow something up, and they are pretty easy to change out. At the very least you could compare pics of the back of both speedos to see if they even share the same plugs/connectors.

If you should try it, report back the results...

FWIW...
I have a low mileage 2001 Springer. The OEM speedo had a very faded dial. The bike also only had 9.8K miles when I bought it 3 years ago...
I searched for several months before I found a used one, in great shape, with a couple hundred miles more than the bike had at the time... it was hard to find.
I kept it on a shelf, until my bike reached the mileage on the odometer of the used speedo, then swapped them out.. I didn't want to mess around with an odometer that didn't match my mileage...

Thanks very much for the very thorough information. Much appreciated. I've just checked the back of the 2009 speedo and the part number is 67197-08 which is still very different from 67033 so I would tend to agree that there must be a significant difference in the speedo and therefore probably will not be compatible.

Harley makes this upgraded speedo that says it works on 2004-2010 Softails. I’ve been thinking about getting one for my ‘09 Heritage. The ‘09 may be different because they went to a retro face on the speedo.

this is the factory speedo on mine

67033-08 is MPH
67197-08 is KMH for international

I just went through this last summer. Speedometer needle had a mind of its own. I bought this: https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/e...rs-tachometers, over the counter from New Castle Harley. Price was same as official H-D site of $314.00. Really like the look and most functions work as indicated in description on website. My main concern was keeping the actual milage. A little apprehensive at first, I followed instructions and was actually pretty easy. When first installed, the miles count down from around 31 to 0. When it hits 0, the new unit is "married" to the bikes vin#. Hope the link works. Forgot to mention, I put this purchase off for a couple years because of cost.
