Went to look at a 85 fsxt nice and a little chopped issue is electric start sounds like the drive is engaging and does nothing but if you rock the bike in gear and move the piston just a bit then it works great ?
I HAVE NEVER seen this before kind of stumped on this one

Is this a bike you are considering for purchase...???
If so, it can't be a simple fix, or the owner would have fixed it before putting it up for sale...

Walk away...
I am looking at it price is pretty good and I have worked on many evo's -never came across this issue !!, if it is a simple starter replacement I can handle that - but the starter sounded and cranked very good thanks for your input
I know the owner and it has never left him stranded ( kicker as well) ,I have never seen it used

The fact that you can do your own work and know the prior owner, would change my mind to seriously consider it....
You have some good suggestions, good luck with the purchase...!!

I am thinking the starter drive is bad or the teeth on the end of the drive is not lining up with the ring gear correctly I might just jump on it. Thank you for the help
Most likely the ring gear on the clutch basket is going... You indicated as long as you rock it back and forth in gear it'll work is a dead give away..

A week solenoid could also cause the wearing on the ring gear and pinion.. keep in mind though that when you shut the motor off it will usually rest in the same place causing the most amount of wear in the ring gear at that point.. yes inspection is necessary...
