Default Need advice

So I bought a 2007 fatboy J une first and have riden about 13,000 miles on it and it has around 45,000 on the bike. It broke down and even though I purchased the factory esp warranty and it is financed through Harley-Davidson the local shop said that they won't work on anything past 2009. So I had it picked up by the next closest dealership about 30 miles away in another town. So here is where the problem begins. I know that it needs a new compensator but something else was slipping really bad under any throttle. At first they said my belt was stripped and I let them know that I had just checked it a week before and another shop had looked at it about a month ago when I had a new rear tire put on. Now they are saying it might be a transmission bearing but they have not said anything definite nor have they even given me a estimate of what the warranty will cover and what I might have to pay let alone given me any idea when I might get it back and it has been in the shop for 3 weeks now. I have called the company and have gotten nowhere. This is my only vehicle and I can't even get a claim number so I might be able to get a rental vehicle under warranty. Any ideas on what to do or anything would be much appreciated.

Are they guessing at a cause or have they actually done an inspection and/or started disassembly for the diagnosis and repair....??

A belt is either stripped or it's not... you just need to look at it... Once the primary is off, that should tell them what they need to know, or that they need to go deeper into the trans...

It's not rocket science, if they have disassembled and inspected it, they should be able to give you an cause...

If they are just throwing out ideas and haven't opened up the primary in 3 weeks, unless they advised you about the long delay, I'd buy/borrow/rent a trailer and be looking for another shop to fix it......

PS- How are you sure it needs a compensator? Did it have any clutch work or adjustments prior to the slipping??

I'd be on the phone with the MOCO, chances are they says thats a dealer thing and have no say. You have to deal with the dealer.

I had a couple of other shops tell me that the compensator was bad but I just was trying to make time to get it in. The slipping just started suddenly and went from bad to worse just as quickly.
I have been on the phone with MOCO and trying to figure this out. I did hear that they ordered some parts but I have no idea what ones.

Sounds like the shops communication skills really suck.... I can't imagine ordering parts without a good diagnosis, so at least they seem to be working on it....

Good luck with the repair, and please be sure to post the final resolution... That's how we all learn...

Default Update

I talked to the shop today and besides my rear belt they said the transmission is shot and that it is obsolete so they can't get another one and they will have to try to find the parts. They said that it's over 6,000 in parts. I'm not a expert but I am pretty sure I could find a transmission for less than that.

I'm sorry, but this **** can't be true. There's way to many holes in this story.

I`m thinking the OP`s communication skills are not top notch either.

It sounds like he is just listening to the shop and nodding his head, instead of finding out what he needs to know.

Or it is just a story...

You are either misunderstanding what you are being told, the shop is taking you for a really big ride, or a combo of both...

You need to be more proactive.... You need to go to that shop and tell them you want to see the damaged parts (I'd take pics), and want to know exactly what's "shot" in the transmission..... Have them explain what's broken, why they think it broke, and what are your options for repair/replacement...

You can get a "Grudge box" gear set from Baker transmissions for your bike, much better than OEM, for $4K... You can get an entirely new Baker DD7, 7-speed transmission, case and all, for $4,700.

You need to go hands on with the shop and get more involved...

If this is legit, I'd be on the phone with mother Harley until the Jochen Zeitz called the dealer to make it right. Should be no problem working on a 2007 if they know their way around a 2009.
