Default Softail models abs question

I have a question regarding softail abs routing. Softails have a two line system on their front abs brakes. The banjo that connects a line to a joint which mounts under the triple tree, then another line that banjos to the brake caliper. Is this joint essential to the ABS system or simply a method to keep the brake lines cleanly away from the fender? Pic for reference.
