Default Stripped Threads

Anyone else have an issue with the derby cover bolt threads in the primary. I replaced my derby cover and 3/5 threads tripped when torqueing to spec (~90 in-pound) Luckily I had some heli-coils in the garage and drilled out and fixed it. Wondering if this is a common occurrence or if anyone else had the same issue. TIA.

Yea it happens.........snug em down,,,,,,,,forget the tourqe value. but keep the sequence........they're too sensitive in my opinion.
the seal inside should keep it from leaking, thats the only thing it's holding back

Thanks. That's usually what I do, but decided to get "fancy". Taken it on and off a few dozen times over the years and this is the first time I used the TW. Go figure.

I've torqued hundreds of those screws to 95 in-lbs, and I've yet to strip a primary cover or screw. That being said, I've always used a fairly expesive Proto torque wrench with a dial indicator. Total range is 0-250 in-lbs.

Thanks for the feedback. I was more surprised than anything. I do not start out at the final value and I used the correct sequence. At 60 in-pounds it was all good and the feel was as it should be. I went up to 90 and stripped one. I figured might as well do the rest and see what happens (had to fix it anyway). 3/5 bad. I'll get the torque wrench calibrated as see what's up.

Derby covers don't need to be torqued. They need to be snugged only. Primary cover yes, 95 in lbs is normal, but not the derby cover.

I would like to know what "snug" feels like?

Me too.

Chances are more than likely that the bolts and threads have been stressed over all the times you had it off and back on, it happens. If using a good and accurate torque wrench to the proper torque from day one - it probably would not have happened.
Repair it and move on as just one of those mechanical things that happen.

I did mine with an air ratchet and red LocTite.
