05 Fat boy 88B motor
05 Fat boy....
first ride of the season this evening and while riding check engine light battery light both came on.. battery was bought last season, could this be compensator failure? How do I check that?

I don't see how the compensator going bad would register a battery or engine light......
How/where and what condition your battery was in when you stored it could cause it to go bad....
Was the bike starting and running well, but just had those lights present...?
Start with the easy, basic stuff...
First, check for codes... it could point you in the right direction for your diagnostics... barring a code to guide you...
Check the battery, make sure it's fully charged and load test it. Check all battery cables/grounds... including grounds to the frame, not just on the battery post....
If all is good there, time to check the voltage regulator/stator for proper operation. If you can use a multi-meter, it is not hard to do the check... Do a search for voltage regulator test and/or Stator test.... the procedure for both should come up.. sorry, but I don't have the time to type it all out...
