So I need to change out my vss. Dealer says it's 3 hours of labor to replace it. I am hoping there is a faster way. If there is I would love to know the process so I can just change it myself and save the cost of 3 hours of labor at the dealer.
If you want to do the work yourself you need to purchase the HD 2017 Factory Service Manual for Softails. The part number is 99482-17. You purchase it through the dealer.
You can also search online for Youtube videos.

It's not hard to do... but access can be complicated and/or tight...
I do not know how a 2017 softail is set up... but on my older softails, the sensor is easy to remove... However getting to the harness connector for the VSS, takes some doing.
It's on the electrical bracket, just forward fo the rear wheel, behind a splash guard. The easiest access is to remove the rear wheel. There is a way, by removing the spalsh guard and sliding it up on top of the rear wheel, where you can get acces, but it's really tight...
I offer the information on how it works on my softails, just to illustrate why it may be booked for a 3 hour repair... AND... to show that you could do it yourself, but you should get the Service manual as Bone Doc suggests...
