Default 2001 Heritage Springer Steering adjustment

Trying to figure something out until my factory service manual arrives
I'm doing a service on the steering head adjustment. According to Clymer's online manual Fxsts models use the fall away method.
However, the Flsts models use the method of attaching a plum bob to the hole at the rear of the fender and using a ruler measuring the fall away distance.
Never heard or have been able to find any YouTube video that reference this method.
According to my VIN I have the FL model and there is no hole at the rear of the fender.
I know Clymers are not the most accurate, but even for them this seems strange

Use the fall-away method. If need be, message me and I'll attempt to copy the process from the service manual

Either method of measuring the "fall away" should work....

With the "Fall Away Method", you are just measuring the distance from center when the wheel moves (falls away) on its own...

Weather you measure that distance using the front of the wheel or the back of the wheel, I would suspect it doesn't matter...

If you don't have a hole in the fender for a plumb line, then just measure at the front of the fender...

NOTE: I must correct myself.... (I hate it when that happens.... )

I just checked my 2001 and 2003 HD softail service manuals. The fall away test measuring at the front fender tip is a different procedure than measuring the fall away from the plumb line at the back of the fender... ONLY the FXSTS uses the plumb line method, per the HD factory service manual..

I will add a post shortly with the manual instructions and model choices...

The fall away test for softails is the same measuring procedure for all models, EXCEPT the FXSTS...

The Service Manual differentiates between all softails and the FLSTS and FXSTS, because the Springer front ends are adjusted differently from the other front ends, but the FLSTS uses the same measuring procedure as the other softails.

It's only the FXSTS model that uses a plumb line measuring technique. And my 2001 FXSTS does have a hole at the bottom of the fender for a plumb line...

Here is the procedure for all Softails, except the FLSTS & FXSTS, from my 2001 HD Softail models. FWIW... the exact same procedure is in the 2003 HD Softail manual...

Here is the procedure for the FLSTS & FXSTS....

I hope this helps to alleviate any confusion over measuring the fall away on softail models....

Thanks. I knew something was off. The cylmer manual has it the exact opposite.in that the FLSTS uses the plumb bob method.
Thanks for the response. I just ordered a factory manual today.
