Just in case you have not done this and I recommend this only as a suggestion....
Add a Signature Line in your USER set up for your bike year, model, and all the letters that Harley recognizes it with. Others will see it at the bottom which enables them to know your exact model if you ever ask a question. All Harleys are not the same and year and all the model letters make a big difference.
Also, add an Avatar of your favorite shot in the USER setup for the small picture others will see in the top left corner of your post.
It's also very helpful to read the 'HDF Site Rules' listed at the top of the new member area.
You're all set.... Enjoy the ride! ______________
If not, start at the beginning....
With the limited info you provide, you need to be systematic and thorough in your diagnosis to find the issues(s)... it all boils down to spark, fuel, and compression.
You had high idle and boiling battery.... That suggests an electrical issues and a possible fuel issue...
Boiling battery is obviously electrical... You replaced the VR but did you check the battery and the stator...?? Those three work together and one going bad can affect the other two... you need to figure out if your 12 volt system is healthy...
After addressing your 12v system, you need to decide if the power issues caused the high idle and lack of starting, or is that a fuel issue... If it is a fuel issue, then you need to go through your fuel system to find out why it raced the engine (carb problem, like stuck float) and now won't let it run...
Keep us informed as you go through your checks and many here will share their experiences and offer suggestions...
You might need to get creative with a battery charger and fan to keep it running long enough to do a proper test.
