Hi All!!! I am new to this forum. I just purchased a 2008 fatboy and have about 600 miles on it. Yes, it feels hotter rhan my 06 Lowrider. My question is this. I see all these posts about oil temp readings, and I am wondering what you all are using to get your readings, I am right now on my third Harley LCD readout oilcap and I have already had two of the analog Harley oil temp guages. They have all been sodifferent on theirreadings that the only thing I can use them for is to see relatively if any mods I do will make the engine cooler.
Now to the question finally!
What are you all using to get your temp readings? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.(in other words HELPPPP!!!) I am fixing to change to amsiol this weekend and add an oilcooler next weekend andI would like topost my results, but I needa reliableTemp guage to do so.Thanx in advance for any help on this question.
kennyb: I know what you mean. The first analog that I bought was 30 degrees out. Carefully repacked it and took it back and got another one. It was within 5. None will be exact, so that's close enough. Place the probe in boiling water to determine it's accuracy and add or subtract the diff to gauge reading for closer approximate value. For what it's worth, the one I bought at the dealer was made in Taiwan. Goes well with the Harley hat from the dealer that's made in China. Ron
I have teh dial indicator, has read 250 degrees on my 07 Fatboy....when the day temp was 100. On the subject of (oil) anyone try Royal Purple yet? Supposed to help lower engine temps. Check out the video clip http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/mcycle.html
I tested my analog dipstick with the boiling water test today, it was hitting right at 210 or so (there are no marks for 212, so close enough). Although I did drop the dipstick in the boiling water and had to fish it out. That was no fun. Retested again, and it seems to be pretty dead on. Good thing these gauges are made to get wet and resist high temps. The glass didn't even fog up.
Well, I've got one (digital guage) and it's been extremely accurate, as compared to my buddie's '04 Fat Boy using the analog guage.
We went on a 125 mile ride today, with ambient temperatures ranging from mid-70's starting out this morning, to low 90's this afternoon heading home. We went from near sea level, and rode up to over 4500 feet (up to Mount Baldy and across to Azusa. for anyone familiar with So. Cal.). The temps ranged from about 220 when moving, to around 240-250 in stop-and-go traffic coming back across Foothill Blvd. (Route 66). We ran the freeway in the morning for maybe 15 miles, and the temps were under 210 while running freeway speeds.
I've been watching the temps closely, and we compared every time I took a reading and they were always within 5-15 degrees of each other.
