Hey guys,
which is better for my twin cam 2003 Softail. The Screaming Eagle kit with housing or the washable k&N style kit?? Comments, opinions, actual experiences? Or are they really about the same? Screaming Eagle set up. Of course I get an high performance filter cartridge. This would keep rain out for sure. HD K&N style kit. This one looks like it would suck water if got stuck riding in rain?
Depends on your budget, I use the Arlen Ness BS but the SE Round kit works well also. Like @RK4ME mentioned, the round one offers several options for a cover.
The basic, round Screamin' Eagle Stage I air cleaner kits come with a synthetic dry element, washable filter, #29442-99E. The SE round High Flow kit also comes with a synthetic dry element, washable filter, #29267-08A. The SE Ventilator kit on my '16 Low Rider also has a synthetic dry element air filter #29670-09.
I prefer those to the K&N gauze filter with oil.
Three of my Twin Cams use them. I have one that is 15 years old and still cleans up well... works great. I bought a couple spares a few years ago so I would always be sure to have some for future use.
I had to go to the gauze, oiled K&N filter on my 124" S&S engine. It had the S&S Stealth Air cleaner and needed the STAGE II air filter (thicker element). Then FuelMoto started to offer a synthetic dry element Stage II air filter element for the S&S Stealth. I now have one of those on my 124" also.
I think the top picture of the SE kit with housing looks the best. Looks stock, with a K&N (or other performance filter) OEM style replacement it should perform close to the lower cone style one yes? I mean Im not racing Im cruising for coffee on Saturday morning. Just want to ditch stock paper filter.
I'm not a fan of the football style oval, I found after a short time it rubbed on the inside of my knee and started to become annoying. The round SE with a nice cover would like real nice. JMO.
Both my older twin cams have the screaming ones. After 20 years I just replaced the filter with new K&N. I don't know good or bad, just what I did.
I am against the exposed air filters, heard they don't like rain, which makes sense.
For mine, the K&N fits the SE filter. I think maybe they orginally came with K&Ns too, can't remember. Started getting some rust, so replaced. Factory air cleaner the rubber was falling apart first year. I was pretty pissed.

here what I went with. HD Screaming Eagle cone K&N kit and cool cover I bought from local guy. Bike came with 100th Anniversary on air cleaner cover I did not care for
