Softail add-ons
I've actually gone both ways. I've got a 2003 Heritage springer which comes with bags and no windshield. Around town I've pretty much stripped it down, No bags, no windshield, no rear seat. I think it lowers the look of the bike and makes it very much more "Heritage looking". When I go touring, I put the bags and windshield on. Interestingly, the Heritage is discontinued HD's 2005 Springer classic has done the same thing, which means now you have to pay for the bags and bar lights.
Regarding the windshield, I've bought an after market windshield, because the standard winshield did not rise high enough to be effective with bugs.

The way that I look at it is, a windsheild, sadle bags, and a back rest are for Electra Glides and Road Kings. Just my view, but it's your bike, and you can customise it any way that you want to. If you get a chance, look at my rides in the photo gallery, and you will the way that I like my bikes.

one of the reasons that i chose the fatboy is that i think it looks o.k. with detachable saddlebags and windshield. i like the heritage too...i just don't like the big windshield and the studded bags. with the fatboy, i can choose my windshield and bags. i went with a windvest windshield. it's a good shield with both good looks and function in mind. then i got detachable bags without studs. for me...it's kind of the best of both worlds. i load the bike up for a trip...then, strip it down when i arrive. to each his own.
