Default Nuts

Looking for rear fender retention nuts for 97 Springer both are stripped out. Harley says obsolete and nothing on Ebay. Any help?

"rear fender retention nuts"....??

You talking bout the acorn nuts on either side of the fender struts that hold the rear fender...?

They're just chrome acorn nuts, #7680W, ACORN NUT 3/8-16 X 25/32 X 9/16 (GRADE 2) (CHROME)

They still show available at a dealer.. Or you could probably get something similar (and cheaper!) at a hardware store..

Whether on a Heritage Springer or an FX Springer, they use the same rear fender acorn nuts... The Heritage Springer uses four, the FX Springer uses six..

No sir these are the shoulder nuts that fit in the fender and held on by a c clip that you put the studs through to hold down the solo seat. Parts 8 and 9

Well, if you can find a parts diagram for it, I'm sure you're going to translate the number in the diagram to the part number in the list down below then Google it.. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.. It's really that simple.. Many businesses/suppliers sell them..
No need to post the same thing 4 times.......

OK, those are called the "seat retention nut".... they don't hold on the fenders. I suspect you are dealing with a 1997 Heritage Springer if you have that seat.

Yes, the are obsolete, so you can't get them from HD. You can keep searching eBay, hoping a set will pop up; Seat retention nut #7485 & Seat retention washer (c-clip) #7484

They are the similar to the "Seat nut Kit w/retention washers" used for the rear of the passenger pillion (#17 in the parts pic), EXCEPT they are a larger thread size. I believe you need them in a 5/16"x24 thread size but I am not sure... If you have the seat mounting studs (#5 in that pic) you can confirm or correct my assumption on the thread size.

I don't know technical term for those type of nuts. If someone knows and posts it up, you could then check for fastener supply companies to see if you can find some.

You may have to get creative and find an alternative solution. You would need something narrow profile to avoid contact with the tire.

You could just find a narrow profile nut & washer, but that would make it an absolute pain to remove the seat. It could be a temp solution while you look for a better alternative

You could go to McMaster Carr and check what they have that could work. You could look under "Welding nuts" or "Press fit nuts".

Thinking outside the box, you could use maybe "high-strength Flush-mount press-fit nuts for sheet metal". But you'd need to get the right size, have the arbor to attach them, and then they'd be permanent, but it should work..

In any case, Harley didn't make those nuts, they sourced them somewhere.. If you find out what they are called, you may be able to find a source for them...

Sorry I couldn't be more help...

Ebay has them, and they are very low-cost. I bought one for my FatBoy. I think it even came with a thumb bolt as a set for about $5 or less.
Use a zip tie to feed it up and under the fender and through the hole. That will let you get a hold of it, and pop on the C-clip.

Sometimes that design is called a Zero Clearance Thread Boss. Sometimes they are called Blind inserts. There is another term, I just can't think of it right now.
