Default Clunking observation

Since my head bearings are tight and there's no play in them and the headlamp mount inside has been cut off to stop it from bottoming out, I still on occaision if it's railway tracks or sharp pot hole will hear some clunking. Finally isolated the little bast^erd. The bike is an 07 fxstc and I've always felt the shocks are stiff which probably attributes somewhat to this. The noise is coming from the gas cap. Found a bump thatwould do it repeatedly and when placing my hand on it the clunk stopped.
