Is that an aftermarket motor in there? Cylinders look beefy in the pic. Dude that thing looks sexy. The weight being off the front end (inverted forks) really does make a difference in handling.
I know there’s gonna be all kinds of people to get their panties in a twist with me saying this. They’ll be all kinds of testimonies of people saying they run five second quarter mile passes to 200 miles an hour in the corner of the tail of the dragon with freaking ape hangers on the bike… But I’m here to speak truth. Ape hangers suck for performance. They’re extremely popular right now and everybody’s throwing them on their bike trying to be a gangster. If you want them for luxe and style by all means go right ahead and do it. But do not fool yourself that will handle as well or be as controllable in a performance setting. And now that I’ve said that, I’ll get flamed with 1 billion comments about how Harleys aren’t made for performance.. they’re made for style. Whatever. I run with crotch rockets and they don’t get the best of me. But that Bike looks like somebody put the time and energy and MONEY into making it one hell of a performer. I’d take that thing around some nice corners, launch it a few times, and see what kind of power and performance it has before you go changing how you can handle it with ape hangers.
You get on YouTube and watch a bunch of street racers with more wallet than common sense out there drag racing big baggers with massive motors and stupid hangers on it and then you see all the wrecks. Do you know why you don’t see a bunch of ape hangers at the dragstrip very often? How about on track day? Because they’re very poor for control. I know I know, “well, my hands are very comfortable, and they don’t fall asleep,” “it’s better posture for me, and I’m very comfortable with my ape’s..” I don’t know might be true. But some common sense, why do you not see professional racers using them? Because they are a huge compromise in control and handling. Maybe you don’t care anything in this world about any of that. But your bike was built for it and looks like it does it well.
There are a lot of legends and lore about the origination of the ape hanger handlebars. But in the culture of us farm hillbillies in Ohio, I’ll tell you what was considered common knowledge by all the old guys that probably knew Methuselah personally. What I always understood was the origin of hangers was back in the very early 50’s It became common practice for local, sheriff and police to run a cable across bumpers and pull them tight when it was reported that large bike groups were going to come through their town. Apparently lots of accidents and even some decapitations.
so some of the gangs started making tall handlebars to protect their necks… That became a symbol, representing gang culture just like the one percent patch, or any of the other things you see. I tried googling that I couldn’t really get much information. But when I was a young lad, that’s what every single old guy said what is the meaning behind ape hangers.
No, I’m the son of an art teacher, who grew up on a farm. I’m pretty much the exact opposite of a guy in a gang. They didn’t write the script to the wild one following me around. So I don’t wanna pretend or pose and be something I’m not, meaning I have no business installing ape hangers on any of my bikes.

somebody spent about 30 grand on that bike. I’d ride it like you stole it for a good long while before I made any changes whatsoever. I don’t personally like tires any bigger than 180 but that’s just my opinion on handling and weight I love that bike. I like it just the way it is and I certainly would want a tachometer on a bike with a motor like that.

Yeah, thanks! I have receipts for over $42K in parts and labor ($75K in today's dollars believe it or not). Crazy. I agree re the tires BUT I grabbed it for 75% of the cost of a new S&S 124 crate engine alone, so didn't want to pass it up.
I am just putting together possible things I'd want to do...primarily cosmetic other than pipes (Samson's on there are faded and have small chrome chip if I'm being picky). My other bikes currently are not nearly as fun to tinker with (BMW GS1200 and K1600B) so I'm psyched for this. My past HD's were all baggers.

So just a heads up on these big inch Evo motors. Do not listen to modern technology answers. An exhaust system can absolutely kill the potential power of a big motor. They are actually more sensitive to exhaust than a smaller performance engine. Trust me, I thoroughly know. You want that big huge motor to breathe. The absolute very best store-bought performers you will find are the step tuned hooker headers. You can’t buy them new, but you can find them every once in a while on marketplace and eBay. I actually bought up three nice sets and just have them set aside for future projects. Another winner on those big motors is the Bassani step tuned drag pipes. Whatever you do don’t put anything that will choke it. You actually need those big giant 2 inch pipes for motors this big, You want something between 34 and 40 inches long and to see the potential of what that motor can output. I know all the Dyno operators absolutely love two into one pipes because they make it easy for them to tune, and they don’t have to work as hard. There may be some two into one pipes for an Evo that were actually built for gigantic motors like this, but if you buy one of the off-the-shelf thunder headers or LSA‘s, or any of those they were made for hopped up 80 inch not a hopped up 124 inch. They will absolutely choke your engine on the top end.
