Default Grip Question

Good evening from AZ.

My buddy just picked up a 1986 Heritage Softail. It only has 748 miles on it. He wants to keep everything on it "as is" but it needs new grips....The old grip material has disintegrated. Any idea if these grips still exist? We're good with buying the complete grip or just the grip material, either way. I don't know if these were the original grips but he likes the logo end caps. Appreciate the help.

The original equipment grips would be black rubber, no chrome accents/trim. The ones on the bike now would have been HD “Parts and Accessories” offerings from HD.

The original part numbers as stock from the factory:

Left grip 56206-94A which replaced 56206-81A

Right grip/throttle 56220-94A, replaced 56220-81B

which can likely be found on EBay

Here’s some Avon grips that look similar that fit an ’86 softail

I’d just go with the grip sleeves.

Wow those Avons look suspiciously similar to Performance Machine Contour grips except the sleeves are branded Avon instead of Renthal

It happens. There’s a popular aftermarket air cleaner that Arlen Ness, Rinehart and others sell and they’re all identical except for the name on them.

I had those very grips on my 1989 Heritage. The missing part was a dense foam. They were a little thicker than the rubber OEM grips, and I found them quite comfortable.

They are from the HD parts & accessories catalog. I put them on shortly after buying my '89 Heritage as a new bike back in 1989.

They are called the "Black Cushion Grips" and fitment was '82+ and '97+ Touring bikes in the 2001 Parts & Accessories Catalog.

Sadly, when I bought my then new 2003 Heritage, I wanted to get those grips, and they were no longer available by 2003....

As luck would have it, there seems to be a pair on eBay... go figure

https://www.ebay.com/p/1734357054

They were sold as a pair back in the day. I can't tell if the eBay add is for 1 pair, or 1 grip...

I hope this info helps....
