That part in your picture has nothing to do with any ground. There are NO electrical wires attached to that piece. I have had that piece in my hand from several different bikes. It holds seat studs, and the little curved portion holds a wire harness (no bare wires) against the fender so the rear tire doesn't hit them. It is part #59174-99 called "Stud Plate". It's been used on softails from 1999 to probably 2017...

ChatGPT is dead wrong...... Don't let its ignorance get you hurt or worse...

Look at the diagram Dan89FLSTC provided for you.

Now.....

There is a smaller, similar looking piece that is in front of the battery, on the frame, on softail models. It DOES have ground wires connected to it... ChatGPT must have got them mixed up...

Here's the parts pic of the "ground strap" as you call it. Harley calls it part #10193- Wire Clamp. It is no longer available from the MoCo. Its an obsolete part.

Here's an actual pic of that wire clamp, with the ground wires connected to it. I was too lazy to go pull the seat on any of my 3 Softails that have it... so I stole this pic from an internet video... As you can see, it is kinda similar to the bracket you pictured, but in fact much different in size, shape, and function.

Bottom line........If you had a battery terminal glowing red, you need to fix THAT issue ASAP.....

It could be a loose ground connection on the metal clamp I showed you above....
But it will have nothing to do with the metal clamp from the rear fender you pictured in your post...

Good luck and report back what you find...

People need to stop letting ChatGPT become the best answer to a question.

If it is glowing red you have a loose connection causing resistance. Take it apart. You might even have a cracked battery stud.

The part originally pictured looks like the stud plate that holds the seat on to me. The Part #8 that hattitude circled in his diagram doesn't look like it has the 2 studs on it. It appears to be held on with a single fastener.
Part #11 that Dan circled looks like the correct one. It seems to be a combination of wire retainer and seat studs.
That's my guess anyway. Can't do any worse than the AI already has, right?

Yes, that is the under fender stud plate and seat screw bracket (part # 59174-99). The little bend on the right side is for the rear wire loom.

I thought it looked familiar. Several years ago I had to buy a stud plate and drill the rear fender when I ditched the passenger pillion and added a small rack on my 2002 Fat Boy.

Yes, Dan's pic shows the stud plate that the OP referenced in his pic.

But the OP thought that was a "ground strap", that ChatGPT told him to check.

In post #9 he said, "According to ChatGPT, this strap is part of the ground (?) and it’s causing the terminal issue. I’ll try it and report back."

I tried to tell OP the part he pictured has nothing to do with any grounds, and showed him where the main grounds attach on Softails. The part I showed him is forward, and under the front of the seat where several grounds attach.

I tried to show him the part he pictured IS NOT the ground strap that ChatGPT referenced.

I hope the OP found the issue causing his battery terminal to glow red, but following ChatGPT put him on the wrong trail .....
