Right where the chaps don't cover the crotch area. In fact I still have the scar to prove it! What's really strange is I didn't even know I was burned until I removed my pants. So it was just a slow process while riding the bike. I knew it was hot but just didn't realize how hot. But I've since taken the heat out of the ride with the SERT, S/E breather, Rush exhaust and Amsoil in all three holes. The bikes can be made right it just takes some more money after the initial big investment. It shouldn't be that way but what are you going to do when HD won't configure them properly and they already have your money. You have no choice but to do the fixing yourself, and If you don't cool them down they will never go the distance, the heat will take it's toll eventually.

I have a question that is not related to the engine heat issue, I am currently looking at either a2008 FXDL Low Rider or a 2008 FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic - can not make up my mind?

I like both of the bikes, to bad you can't combine them both together, for example, I like the heritage but wish it had tubeless tires and cast alum wheels, not spokes.

If this helps, I plan to use the bikeas a commuter to and from work (Lakewood to Long Beach and back)during the week and on the weekend, my wife and I will be joy riding.

Once Idecide on which bike to buy, the next questions would be,where are the good deals and from which dealer should I do busines with?

Any thoughts, suggestions and/or ideas would be nice.

A friend of mine has this bag type thing that hangs over the front of the seat and deflects the heat from the inside of your legs and he swears by it.
I can't remember the name but I did look them up and they're a hundred bucks (figures...HD= $100).
My '08 hstc get's hot in this Texas heat. But notto the point of shutting down.
I've been told by a long time mechanic that when you pull up to stop DO NOT burp the throttle while sitting there. Just let it idle.
He say's that it causes the computer to change the fuel air mix to a richer setting and thus the cylinder starts to get hotter.
Seem's wierd to me but the guy's got the experiance so who am I to question.
I run the Syn 3 but will start changing sooner than 5K.
I have the maintenance program but 5K seems a little long to me and I guess I'm stuck with the Syn3 'cause I certainly don't want to mix oils.

Harley_Dude has it correct. The twin cam motor runs hotter than the evo's, it is just the way it is with the epa restricting emissions, the leaner the mixture the hotter they run. The best bet is to spend less time idling and more time riding.

Or just install a set of IEDs or XiEDs from nightrider.com. I put them on my Heritage a couple days ago and it is by far the best, easiest mod you can do to an 07 or 08. Yes my bike would get hot at stoplights. It was considerably hotter than my 99 evo Heritage. Rode it with Vance and Hines big shot longs and the fuel pak and a K&N filter. It was better but still would heat up at lights. Not any more. It is running cooler than the evo ever did. Only $100 but it fixes the air fuel ratio at idle up to about 50% throttle opening. Took all of ten minutes to install. Wouldn't want to ride the bike without them now. It made an even better improvement in my sons Wide Glide, smoother throttle, made it seem as though he had done a gearing change.

yeah they run hotter due to epa guidelines and emmisson standards. You can fix it buy putting more air into the engine by doing a stage one and pipes and SERT. The thing that sucks is you do pay money for them and they are not right but unfortuntaly lideral idiots and emviormental wackos have reduced ud to this

Thanks for posting this. I've asked questions on this forum before about the Nightrider products but didn't get any replies. I've looked at these and they seem to be the easiest answer. I think this will be my next mod.

Guess I don't understand this XIED stuff. I thought the fuel pak and other fm systems took care of the lean air/fuel issue that supposedly causes heat/performance problems. What does the nightrider device do that the fuel pak doesn't?

You have to understand the workings of Harley's efi system. Closed loop/open loop. The bike operates in closed loop from idle to about 50% throttle. It goes to open loop at about 50% to wide open throttle. Most add ons like the fuel pak only change the open loop portion. The nightrider IED or XiED changes the air/fuel mix from idle to 50%, the closed loop area. So if you only use one or the other your only changing your bike about 50% for the better. If I had a choice of only one it would without question be the XiED. The fuel pak helped, the XiED fixed it. The bike runs so cool now compared to before that if it wasn't mine I wouldn't believe it. It makes the bike run at an optimum air/fuel ratio, the one that harley would do if they were allowed.
