Speaking strickly from an engineering standpoint, the bikes here in Cali have catalysts in the mufflers. The engine has to be calibrated to run at a certian temperature (HOT) to make the cats work properly, if the engine is running cooler, or richer the unburned fuel would damage the cats.
So when you change the pipes out and recalibrate the motor you can cool it way down.
Here's all the information you ever wanted to know about it.
The site traces surging and overheating issues from before the release of the map recall on the big V.

The short answer is Yes... lots of folks have had issues with heat on the '07s before a remap of the ECM.

Could it be possible that all these problems are "early" '07's??? Mine is one of the last '07's built, and I have none of those issues at all.
I hear problems w/ only the 96 in engines, my 05 Springer has never had a heat issue at all, my dads 2008 Ultra is hot as hell! He had to get the heat deflectors & he said that helps
italfatboy... as I understand it, the tweaked map began to be used at the factory sometime after the midpoint of the '07 production, so a late production bike should already have had an updated map before it hit the dealers floor. Models already on the dealership floor should have been remapped before being sold.
And I believe bgismo20 is correct in that the issue only affected the 96 Vs. Take all of this with a grain of salt though. I'm no expert.
A nice set of pipes, a high-flow breather and a remap seems to do wonders for the heat issue as well as waking up the ponies.

CT954, My wifes 07 flstc had the same problem. It would get so hot one cylinder would shut down. I did some testing on other Harleys and they were not near as hot as my wifes. My 07 flstc does not run as hot as my wifes did. So if you listen to donk-316 you may believe that it is normal and we are just a bunch of pansys. Fact is some of the bikes do run a lot hotter than others, and in some cases it is causing the engine to shut down completly. It sounds like donk has onethat is running normal temp. and is so narrow minded that he thinks just because his isn't running hot, everyone else must be a pansy. Could donk be short for donkey or another simular animal?
