Yup, when I read the OP, I thought damn, that's a good price for a service with all synthetic. Then I saw the date - oops, that was 4 years ago.

Whatever the cost for a X mile service, it's too much. Mine cost me the cost of materials and a few hours of my time.

Can you recommend a good indy? I was thinking either that place off the Maple Valley Highway (Thunder Mountain Cycles or something like that) or that place in Kirkland (Cyclopath). Besides a 20k service, I need the seals replaced on my transmission and I'd like to get the inside cam chain tensioner checked.

I just got a quote of $250 for the 1K service using Synthetic.

Not bad considering a 8 Quarts of SYN 3 Oil is $95.84. Oil Filter is $9.95 and then who knows what they will charge for the the O rings ?

I'm still doing my own 1k service. Dealer can't get me in for a month and my Bike already has a 1k miles. I bought the Service Manual and it all looks easy to me and I have done it all before on my other bikes so It's no big deal. I think due to the economy my HD Dealer must have down sized to just 1 mechanic. I think they had 3 mechanics about 5 years ago and they have cut there staff by half in the entire store.

Where you putting all of that? Even considering all three holes it won't take 8 Quarts.

According to the Service Manual
( unless I read it wrong )

Engine takes 3.5 - 4 quarts
Primary takes 2 quarts
Transmission takes 2 quarts

Thats 7.5 - 8 quarts.

Ummm Edited to add.

Maybe I read that wrong.
I'll have to re-check when I get home tonite cause I'm "gearing" up to do my 1k service and I'm making a parts list.

Things must have changed drastically since 04.

Mine takes 3 in the tank 1 in the primary and 24oz in the trans.

Triple check your oil tank before just dumping all that oil in there, most manuals show full capacity but you leave quite a bit in the motor when you change it.

I also never use the same oil in all three. For me its three different animals.

2.5-3 for engine, 1 for primary, 1 for tranny.

I just did my 1000 mile and pretty easy stuff with the manual.

What year bike and model do you have.?

I think you may be right about the "1 for primary, 1 for tranny." I think the manual said 32 oz and i just figured that 32 oz was 2 quarts. I should have realized that 2 pints of beer = 1 quart. My bad.

But....

My Service Manual says 4 quarts for a clean Engine and 3.5 quarts for just a drain.
