IW1...I know the feeling. I don't have a Softail but I do have an 05' Sportster 1200 and it's my first bike. I was never so excited about anything I have gotten in my life and that list includes some awsome cars, jet skis and boats. For some reason, the Harley blew them all away as far as excitement was concerned. It was the most fun experience Ive had when I bought that thing....Convince your wife....Send her on here and we will help ya out. Like TC mentioned, perhaps you should get her into riding too...Could be good for the marriage ;-) Good luck!
The reason that I went with the springer is totally the front end. When I was growing up I saw a lot of choppers with the springer front end and it stayed in my head through the years. I sat on one several years ago and I knew from then on that it was the bike that I would someday get. Indian Larry was the man, as far as I am concerned, and he liked to use the springer front end a few times. I've only had 2 bikes in my life and they were 25 years apart. I don't have the slightest idea of how other Harleys ride or handle, I just k new that I wanted a springer for my first Harley. The springer front end is old style and it really gets the attention around here when I ride it. Right now, I wouldn't trade my springer for anything. Good luck and enjoy the ride

I know how you feel about the bike thing. I wanted one for years and never was able to put everything together in a way that I could get one. I started watching the Biker buildoffs on the DSC channel and watching and listening to Indian Larry made me realize that I needed to get it in motion and not wait any longer. My wife knows that I have always wanted a Harley and she also knows that I am an impulsive person. I had been to the HD place a few times and one of the times that we went there, the salesman asked me what I wanted. I told him that I wanted a Black Springer. He said that they could get me one and I said, do it. My wife was a little surprised, but I said, didn't you really expect me to do this sometime anyway. She said, yes. She finally got over my whim and everything is cool. I got mine this year at the age of 54. The only regret that I had is that I wish that I could have gotten it sooner. Take your wife out for a spin on the back of a Harley and show her how much fun that it can be, it seems to work for a lot of people. Good luck
You know Springer, I had good look at a springer too (an 05 and an 06 I think). Bloody nice. I asked a lot of questions about them as well. The salesman reckoned that once you've ridden one , you never go back to a standard. Is that the case ? Do you notice a big difference riding one.
Springer...I can relate to what you said. For several years now, I've been saying the first Harley I will buy will be a Sportster. I've always wanted a Sportster and I've always loved the way they look ,regardless of what people might say about it. I love it. It's so classic looking and that's what I like most about it. I guess the point here is to each, his own....
Although, I have been recently saying that my second Harley will be a Springer....lol.
Yeah, I would have gone with a sportster too Warrior, if only they offered a bit more leg room. I'm super lanky and can't fit on one.
Still think they are cool though.
I've noticed all of the jap sports bikes are getting smaller and smaller in terms of wheel base and overall size. Read an article about how the latest GSXR 1000 is the size the old 750's used to be, and 600's are the smaller than 250's used to be. Great if you are a japanese build, not so good for average or larger folks.
They're all gonna end up riding around on minibikes one day (really, really fast ones ).
Anyway, just another plus for HD as far as I'm concerned.
I have heard a lot about what people say about the Sporty and it's really not important to me. I've sat on a few of the 1200's at the dealership and it wouldn't bother me a bit to ride one. Although I obviously have a bigger and heavier bike, I would like to ride a Sporty sometime. Don't worry about what others think, if the Sporty is the one that you can afford or like, just do it and enjoy the ride. My first bike was about the size of a Sporty and I put 2100 miles on it when I made my first road trip. I enjoyed every minute of it.
