load equalizer needed?
I am replacing my stock fender struts on my 07 Train with smooth painted struts. I am removing the front and rear blinkers (I know not safe) but it looks good. Do I need a load equalizer, and will any of this effect my Smart alarm? I called two different HD dealerships to ask this, and it would have been less painful slambing my hand with a two pound hammer.
I switched my rear signals to LEDs without adding a load equalizer. A tech at Biketronics said to do a momentary disconnect of the battery. This will let your ECM try to adjust for the different load. It may or may not work, at least it wont cost you anything to find out.

http://www.badlandsmotorcycleproduct...LECTRONICS.htmhas one for newer hogs with the factory security system. I think it is the III version.
If your actually eliminating the signals altogether you may not have to do anything.
Normally the only reasonyouneed an equilizer is if you werereplacing the bulbs with LED's or eliminating just one bulb, and your not.
The equilizer "might" be needed if you have the newer Security System II installed, because it trys to flash the lights to alert you when its turning on and if the bike gets moved without the fob nearby. But it may not care if your just riding. In that case the security system "may" interpret the lack of a complete signalcircuit, because the bulb filiments are missing,as some kind of problem.
The security system and how it actually works is a bit of a gray area for most of us. I'm sure if there was a bike thief around he could tell us how to get around nearly anything. But alas we're all just a littlebit toohonest to know about such things.
You might try just pulling out the bulbs first, ride around a bit without them just to see what happens.
It wouldn't be any different then removing the assemblies, at least to the electronics.
If you have a problem, you'll know that you need the equilizer. But while your wating for it you can put the bulbs back in to keep riding. Then when it arrives you can try it again with just it installed.

Now that makes sense to me. I really appreciate you passing on that idea. Either way when I get it done and all is well, Ill make sure to post what had to be done. Thanks

I removed the front signals and have LED signals in the rear with no load equalizer. The security system indicator light stays lit on the speedo. It does not cause any problems with the operation of the system but it might annoy you. If it does, a load equaliter made for use with the security system will make it turn off.
