I just got a Cannon SD1000 digital camera for riding and everyday shots, butlike with most purchases I'm going through buyers remorse. I want to use it at races, charity and club rides. This means it'll spend a good bit of time in a sweatyt-shirt pocket. Thats where the second guessing comes in... The Cannon isn't waterproof but a Ziplock bag takes care of that to some degree. Pentax has a model that is waterproof though for only $50 more. The Pentax Optio W30 has a high waterproof rating (10ft deep for 2hrs) and a high dust rating. This should be good for motorcycle events, Guadalupe River tubing/beer drinkingand beach trips too.
Anybody ever used the Pentax and have any thoughts??? How about other cameras? I want to have a final decision made before the Lone Star Rally in 2 weeks.
I bought the Nikon D40 also, great camera for all around use. Many auto options plus it has manual settings also. Don't know how waterproof it is and it's also a little bulky to be carrying around your neck all day. Too big with the lens attached to fit in your pocket but I still like it just fine. Better quality pics than the small pocket size cameras.
I have a Canon SD500, which took great pictures. What I really liked about it was it was so easy to carry. It fits right in your pocket.
The problem was the LCD screen. When we were on vacation I had it in my pants pocket. When I took it out to take a picture the LCD screen had broken internally. I took it back to Best Buy to be replaced or repaired under the protection plan I purchased. They said it was due to "impact damage" and was not covered. Canon would not stand behind their product either. I later learned that whenever the LCD screen is cracked Canon deems it to be due to impact damage which is always the user's fault.
My point is, the internal part of the LCD screen is very fragile and can easily break. The outside glass is not the problem. If it breaks, it's your problem. I was alwasy very careful with my camera, but the screen broke. Be very careful with your Canon.
We have been very happy with our Pentax W30. It is a great little point and shoot pocket camera. But you do have to remember it is a point and shoot. So some times if there is not enough light the pictures are just crap. little camera little flash bad night time pictures.
On the bright side you can take this camera just about anywhere. We took it down the colorado river without a hitch.
