Does anybody out there have tinitus its a ringing in the ears. I'm not sure if the VH pipes has caused this. Just wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this since some of you are long Harley riders.
If you just discovered this its highly doubtfull that your pipes caused it. Tinitus is caused by LONGTERM overexposure to loud noises. If you havent worked in a loud environment over a long period of time Its most likely a temporary thing and will fade with time ...like the days when you went to concerts.Ive been an aviation Mechanic now for over 30 years and I dont have it becuase of the precautions ive taken ( ear plugs , ear defenders , etc ). I always use ear plugs when Ive ridden, not becuase of the bikes noise but becuase of the wind noise ...it drives me insane. Yours will most likely fade, try some ear plugs when you ride , any walmart or walgreens carrys them.
Tinnitis is not caused by long-term exposure to loud noises. Tinnitis is self-generated in the ear by failed nerve ends. I never was not around loud noises, worked in a quiet laboratory, and still got tinnitis. The only 'mask' I've found (there are no cures) is an iPod with music. So go ride and enjoy your pipes.
Couldn't hear because of all the 'ringing' in my ears...
Anyway, I doubt if that would be caused by the exhaust on your bike, as they aren't that loud, even with open pipes....
Your lawn mower or weedeater probably put more of a strain on your eardrums.
I've had 'ringing' in my years since way back in the military days, but it doesn't seem that bad and after a number of years you kind of 'tune it out' and hardly notice it. I've had hearing tests in the past, and any loss of hearing is limited to a very narrow frequency band.
But that was caused by intensive explosions and gunfire, and is pretty common with veterans that were involved in a lot of fire fights and other combat operations.
A huge cause is wind noise. and Helemets don't help. I know because i have Tinnitis. No cure really . Google this and you will see. However, EARPLUGS do help, and they help a lot. no debate here. Just the facts that i know to be true per my Doctors and research.
With this being said, also a sudden shock like a gunshot can cause ear damage too . Doctots also tell me loud music, usually sounds that come from a sub-woffer do damage too. My many years of loud rock and metal music have not helped either . This a really a good thread to talk about.
I didnt know people were born with it or even had it w/o being exposed to loud noises. We were always taught it was loud noises and I never questioned it. Good to know though.
I too, suffer from tinitus, and have for most of my life. exposure to loud and prolonged noises doesn't help. mostof my hearing loss is a result of flying Army helicopters. when the ringing is so bad I can't sleep, I use a "white-noise" radio... you know the one that has the wind sounds, or babbling brooks..etc.... I ride with a 3/4 helmet with helmet speakers plugged into an iPod.
i had a new set of pipes put on early this year and dumped them within 3 weeks ... my ears were ringing every time I used them and annoyed the crap out of me. Myreplacement ( different brand)pipes seem just as loud but don't affect the ears - maybe something to do with the pitch ? I dunno but hell of alot better now.
So I say if you have the $'s don't put up with it, do some research and find something that doesn't make your ears ring ! grzly
Had the same experience with the SEII's on my Sportster - not exactly loud byHarley standards but way to irritating for me after a few months, even with ear plugs. All V&H stuff is way too noisy for me (and the neighbours). Would never ever ride without ear plugs, as others have said, the wind noise is the real ear killer.
