I’ve had tinitus for years and I guess you just get used to it. It wasn’t until I started reading this thread that I noticed the ringing in my ears.

Long term exposure to loud noises can certainly cause damage , just ask Jeff Beck, Ted Nugent and Pete Townsend . I used to play very load and experienced " the echo of the amplifiers ringin in my head" and like many the wind noise that continues after a long ride , load pipe exposure , a visit to the rifle range.

I've taken to wearing earplugs in my full face all the time now , even though my new bike doesn't have the V&H propipes like my last one .

I was born with hereditary nerve damage in my ears and have suffered from tinitus all my life. Just something I've lived with and is always there.

I have had tinnitis all my life. I use ear plugs when I ride over 30 minutes. If I didn't, it would take hours before the loud ringing would stop.

I've had it for 13 years. Your brain "habituates" to it. I go days and days without "hearing" it. Just protect those ears. Sustained, high decibal wind and pipe noise will damage your ears. There are some options with ear plugs. The standard cheap foam ones are good, but they tend to let very little noise in. I just look for something to bring it down a bit so I can still hear what's going on around me (sirens, traffic, ...). I'll probably get custom fitted at some point whenI feel like dropping the cash (about $100).

Eventually, you'll get used it (should you find no other resolution.)

There are certain times when even I can't fight it though, especially when walking into an empty warehouse in the morning... ugh.

So when I say it's too quite, and people need to make noise, I mean it 'cause the silence they hear, is the ringing I hear.

I have tinnitus. Unlike most of you guys who have it and here the constant siren type noise, I hear "crickets". Yes, crickets. I found out I had it during one night about 3 summers ago. While sleeping next to an open window, I awoke to close the window. Naturally, I heard all the sounds of the night, all chirpping away prior to closing the window. Upon closing the window, I realized I still heard the crickets. I looked around to see if, in fact, I closed the window. The window was closed. I put my hands over my ears, and still continued to hear the "crickets". I was finally diagnosed with tinnitus. Like someone said earlier, I can go for days and not notice it. But if I listen for it, I will hear crickets.
You can look up more info here:

I suggestgetting a good set of custom made ear plugs. Then you don't have to worry about full face helmets, wind, or loud pipes. If you attend almost any major bike show during this comingoff season, you will likely find at least one booth that offers custom ear plugs. It will cost you about $100.00. As well, most audiology testing centers also offer services that include making custom ear plugs.
What ever the cause for your tinnitus, you have to protect what hearing you got left.

Does anybody out there have tinitus its a ringing in the ears. I'm not sure if the VH pipes has caused this. Just wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this since some of you are long Harley riders.
Do you ride with your wife on the back? Since I banned my missus from the back, thatwhining noise disappeared.
