Tinitus
I give the buzzing in my ears to the years of loud music and gunfire. Ear plugs mess with my balance, too much pressure on the eardrums. Can only wear the over-the-ear muffs while shooting.
It depends on situation if I notice the "tone" in my ears. Right now, it is very noisy, almost covering up the music from the radio. Other times, I don't even hear it.

I've had it since my late teens. The usual- any form of loud music (especially concerts), construction working for many years, wind noise too. I HAVE to wear cotton in my ears when riding. I, too, have to use a "white" noise to sleep. The wife's snoring is not counted as white noise.
I’ve had tinitus for years and I guess you just get used to it. It wasn’t until I started reading this thread that I noticed the ringing in my ears.

There are other causes not listed here. Certain antibiotics can cause Tinitus. As well as Acoustic Neuromas. sinus congestion as well (remember there is an air/fluid level behind the ear) An MRI should be done to rule out any structural integrity issues. A very common cause of Tinitus exacerbation is stress. The wifey has it. No cure whatsoever...
I have tinitus from working as a crew chief on Air Force jet fighters.
I didn't alwasy use the proper protctive gear as a young man.
Now when it is quiet in the house........it is NOT really quiet.
When I go to bed, I hear this high pitch squeeling noise all the time
(not HER...the other high pitch squeeling.......LOL)
Dr. says nothing I can do...except don't aggrivate the situation.
I still don't use ear protection while riding.......but double up at the gun range.

Having spent my naval career as a Ping Jockey and listener of white noise (Submarine Sonarman), I developed both tinitus and hearing loss. Kinda hard to use proper hearing protection when your job is to hear every little noise when operating passive sonars and making distinctions on returns when using active sonars.
Threegood things came out of the tinitus and hearing loss:
1) The VA gave me a 20% disability rating upon separation from the service; and
2) My hearing loss is in the 300Hz to 1Khz range. The perfect range for my wifes voice...lol
3) My pipes don't sound loud to me!!

I think this is the most "wife jokes" I've seen on a single thread on these boards.
I'm dying laughing. I guess becauseI'm not married yet, I don't quite get them completely, haha.

I started developing hearing problems when I was about 5. I lost hearing on my left ear of very high and very low frequencies. Doesn't effect everyday hearing. I developed tinitus when I was about 11 or 12 and have had it since (I'm 38 now). I thought it was funny that someone said they heard crickets because one of the things I can't hear in my left ear is crickets. The ringing dosen't bother me too much unless it is very quiet or my ears get plugged up like if I'm flying, then it is maddening. I never don't hear it, just don't always notice it. No cure, and no drugs that have ever had any effect, at least for me. You just get used to it.
