Default 6 speed ?

I have been reading trying to find the fuel milage with a5 speed trans convertedinto a 6 speed. Is there that much difference to pay the price or is it just the comfort riding at lower RPMs. I have a 93 Fatboy that I am thinking of changing my trans out to a 6 speed but my riding is half and half {street and highway} I can see where the pay off would be if you were riding Hi way all of the time.

I "doubt" you are ever going to ride enough to have the 6th gear pay for itself.
But if oil prices keep going up and stay there long enough that could change.
Its better only because it will cut down on vibrations and with a "shaky" EVO engine that might be something toconsider.

I switched out to a 6 speed Spyke trans. a month ago. Around town the mileage went up almost 4 mph...most of my trips to work and back are freeways. When the wife and I with luggage went on a 4 day, 1400 mile trip the mileage went up to almost 50 mph average. We covered pretty much all types of roads from freeway speeds of 80+ to winding mountain roads with 10-15 mph corners for almost 35 miles.
Before I put in the 6 speed I was averaging 40 mph with a PCIII on it around town, about 43 on long trips. Since I average 16,000 miles a year upgrading was definitely worth the money I spent.
Oh...and my RPM's dropped at 75 mph from 3100 to 2500 RPM's.

I don't understand how a 6 speed would get better mileage, then a 5 speed, driving around in town.

On paper it shouldn't, but I suspect that having a 6th gear in hand encourages more a "tempered" riding style that does make the mileage go up. Especially in bikes owned by guys who's more formative experiences with Harley's were on Shovelhead and EVO engined bikes with theirolder 4 and 5 speed gear boxes.

Most six speeds are close ratio. Hence higher ratio whichcan give you a little better fuel mileage.

Both 5 and 6 speed final gear is 1-1. You have to look elsewhere to lower rpms.

It doesn't. But on the Interstate way better and much smoother ride. 85 MPH in 6th feels like 60-65 in 5th.

That's only first gear. The close ratio is first to second. Don't know many people riding around in first....
