Engine guard is definitely the answer. It has happened to me twice, but for different reasons. First time on my brand new Deluxe, with less than 100 miles on it, my boot lace caught in the shifter for just long enough to loose my balance. I got new laceless boots after that incident. The second time, after washing my bike, I slipped on a wet spot with mosson the driveway and lost my balance. Both times the engine guard saved my bike. I couldn't even see a scratch, which was a huge relief. It just kind of rolled over on the engine guard and didn't even hit my mirror.
I do hope you were lucky enough not to damage your bike. If so, what did you damage in the process?
My sig pic is old. I did have the mustache engine guard on the bike. No Damage! The floorboard folded up and it rested on the engine guard. I do believe that the engine guard more than paid for itself this last weekend!!!
Sililair story here, I had riden onto a small river ferry with a wet steel deck on my Road King. I put mt foot down but it slipped. I did the splits (ouch) but the engine gaud save the bike. It just couldn't save my groin or my pride.
