Default TMax and Softail

Anyone have any hints, tricks, or secrets for successful installation of a TMax w/AT in a 2007? I have read the manual, just looking for practical experience before I dive in!

Thanks!!

#1 - Get the correct tools for the O2 sensors, can be rented at AutoZone.

#2 - Use a 18x1.5mm thread chaser to cleanout the O2 sensor holes.

#3 - Make certain the new O2s have "anti-seize" on the threads, or get some.

#4 - Presoak the existing ECM bolts with "LiquidWrench" to prevent
spinning the brass threaded inserts in the plastic mounting bracket.

#5 - When mounting the new O2s and tywrapping the wires,
leave enough slack in the wiring for the engine vibration.

#6 - Load the v4.5 firmware into the unit. All TMax's that have been
"on the shelf" for a while will still have v4.4 firmware.

#7 - Don't ASSUME that the TMax was shipped to you with the proper map.
Load it yourself.

#8 - If using a Laptop computer, don't run on battery, plug it into AC for programming.

#9 - If using a USB to Serial adapter, make certain it is proven to work with SERT and TMax.

#10 - RTFM and complete the "initialization procedure" correctly.

#11 - AutoTune is NOT instantaneous!
~300 miles will be required with a shutdown and restart about every 30 miles.

#12 - Take your time, do it right, Enjoy.

Thanks 06FXDBI, That's great info, clear and concise. I should be receiving mine today. But damn if it didn't turn cold yesterday.

I just installed mine on an 06, so my biggest chore was routing the oxygen sensors. Programming the TMAX isn't too bad. I thought the directions were a bit confusing, so I called their tech support line and they walked me through it. Oh, and the only real complaint is that there isn't much clearance for bolting down the unit. I ended up using three bolts instead of four. but it's on there pretty well.

Thx 06FXDBI
Those tips will make all our lives much better!!

Are all 02 sensors the same so if I go to autozone and ask for an O2 sensor tool they will know exactly what I am talking about, or should I just take my Tmax with me? Do the stock sensors use the same tool as the Bosch?

I will let everyone know how it goes....

I didn't use any special tool for the O2 sensors. Are you using the stock exhaust? If so that may be why the tool but I replaced the exhaust at the same time and put the O2 sensors on before putting the exhaust on with an open wrench.
Remove the battery and route the wire for the sensors that way as the ends being the size they are won't route any other way.
I routed my wires along the right side of the bike.
The rear wire is fine but the front wire is very tight but I wanted to leave a loop at the sensor in the front.
3 nuts on the ECU is all I could get on also but it is very secure.
Make sure on one of the steps you run the temperature up to about 280.
I only ran it to 250, their minimum suggested, and went out for a ride.
When the bike got hotter than 250 the idle RPM went up to about 2000 and really concerned me.
Went home and ran the sequence again to 280 and no more problem.
I got the firmware update from my local dealer to 4.5 but this is what you will need to make the settings for the backfire issues to work. I called and they led me through this upgrade.
Make sure you do the part to update the maps so you get any new ones they may have added recently.
The physical install is very easy no worries.

All O2 sensors have the same setup. The "tool" for them is a fancy reinforced socket with a slot to accomodate the pigtail wire. If you can get in there with the right sized open end wrench it will work too.

Let us know how you make out, mine is due here today or tomorrow. But we got nearly 2 feet of snow over the weekend. So getting the bike up and running with it isn'tgoing to be realhigh on the priority list for some time.

I have an 06 Fatboy without any oxygen sensors in the exhaust, V&H Bigshots, do I have to get a new exhaust or can I just drill a hole and install some kinda keeper?
