1. Remove large phillips head screw which I assume is a set screw for the fork tube. It is somevery large size andneither HD or Lowes has a phillips scew driverto fit it. I tried the largest one's they carry and it still is loose and wants to strip out the screw head so I don't want to push it too much.
2. To remove the 1 3/8" fork tube plug, should I use an adjustable/crecent type wrench or try to find a box wrench to fit it? I don't want to scratch the new spike fork tube plugs.
Anyone ever romove the stock fork tube top plugs or have experience with them? That might be able to offer some help.....?
when you remove the top fork screws, put your bike up on a jack so the front springs in the forks are not compressed. they'll come off no problem. If you do it with the bike on the floor they will be hard to turn and fly off when they get loose enough, maybe hurt someone.
No need to remove the big phillps head screws, and no need to worry about the springs because they are held in by another plug. A large opening 10" or 12" adjustable will work for removing old caps and installing new ones, and will be more usefull and cheaperdown the road than asingle 1 3/8" combo wrench.A light coat of greese can help to prevent scratching but BE CAREFULL, it can also help the wrench to slip off and bang something else.
