RE: Looking at a Softail tomorrow - need advice - first purchase
I'm going to have to disagree with some of the others on here. $9,000 for a 2002 FXST is a high. The 2002's will have the 130 tire on the back. My 04 has a 140 and since last year they have had 200 tires. Kelly Blue Book shows a retail of $11,600. NADA shows an average retail of $8,600. I recently tried to sell my 04 FXST with tons of chrome, add ons, and billet aluminum wheels for $12,000. Not a bite. Not even a look. The market is flooded with used bikes. I think if you really want the 02 you can get a better deal. If you can find one, MSRP on a 2007 FXST is $14,995. And many dealers with cut you a deal on a 2007 right now.

Let's see....Kelly BB says $11,600 and NADA says $8,600. The price on the bike is $9,000, hmmm, sounds like a GOOD deal to me. Surely the low mileage, custom paint and exhaust are well worth the $400 over the lowest retail. And as far as the rear tire size is concerned...it really doesn't matter. Like stated before...if it has been well maintained, BUY IT.

Better hope I don't get there first. j/k but anyways, who gives a damn about the rear tire. fat rear tires are a fad, if you want a fat rear tire go buy the kit and get one. carbed harleys are gonna be hard to come buy if you decide to keep it. imho it's not a bad way to go with the epa and what not. 130 was the stock rear for years on shovelheads and evos all the way up to twincam.
now I like my 05 EFI bike, but for the last two years or so I've been working on a shovel in my garage, and I'm just startin a pan. I feel wayyy more attached to those bikes than my first 05' NT. Sometimes older is better. Has that broken in harley feelin.

It does sound like a good deal... but if you are buying it from a dealer get something off even if it is only $500.00. If you can get something off then you have a great deal.

Check the pipes man. When I bought mine from the dealer I did not think to look under the heatsheild at the pipes. about a week later the pipes started blueing, didn't think much of it and let it go for about a month until it got real bad. Finally took of the heatsheild on my Vance and Hines Longshots and found a 2" crack at the bend of the rear cylinder pipe. This is the picture of the bike the day I bought it. Looks can be decieving sometimes. BUT, that was the only thing wrong with it. Just paid 650 bucks for new pipes. This one ran me 9,500 bucks.
