It should be on the jiffy stand, with the engine warmed up, to get an accurate reading.

Why do they call it a jiffy stand?

Why do they call it a jiffy stand?
As taken from wiki

Originally, most bikes had a frame mounted 'center stand'. On most older HD models, there was a center stand clipped to the inside of the rear fender requiring the operator to lift the whole back end of the bike to swing it into place under the frame, the "jiffy stand" was a quick easy method of standing the bike up without getting a hernia...the term jiffy stand was coined to distinguish the center stand from the side or "kick" stand as it could be deployed in a 'jiffy'.

Manual says to ride the bike enough to get fully warmed up. Parkit on the side stand and let idle for one or two minutes. Shut it off and check level on dipstick.

Ok, in my car, when it goes below the bottom edge of 'ok', the dipstick is graduated so that you add one quart. When you get below the 'ok' mark on a Softail, is there a standard amount of oil to add? Yes, I understand you add and then recheck. But knowing how much its low when the stick reads just at the add line would help to avoid overfilling.
