When I installed the chrome lowers on my FXST it wasn't that bad. I removed it by myself and just kept an upward pressure knowing it would push downward. You do have to put some pressure to get it to catch and screw back on.

If you jack the front wheel off the ground its not bad at all. Just be careful not to get your face in the way, just in case it lets go suddenly. There's not a lot of power tbehind the plug then, but you don't want to accidentally catch one in the eye. Put a towel over it as you unscrew at the end if your worried andit won't go anywhere.

From that sentence it sounds like they are already apart. But, in any case, if the tubes are off the bike they have no weight on them, ergo no tension built up, ergo little to no tension to shoot your eye out.
